08/06/2007 - Toronto, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Robinson Cano keyed a four-run sixth inning with a two-run double and a run scored, leading the New York Yankees to a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game series at Rogers Centre.
Melky Cabrera chipped in three hits with a run scored and an RBI for New York, which was coming off a weekend sweep of the Kansas City Royals and has won seven of its last eight. The Yankees began the day one-half game behind Detroit in the American League wild card race.
Andy Pettitte (8-7), in his 300th career start as a Yankee, pitched 5 2/3 innings for the victory, allowing three runs on six hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. He beat the White Sox his last time out and has won back-to- back starts for the first time this season.
Mariano Rivera struck out the side in the ninth -- retiring Alex Rios, Vernon Wells and Frank Thomas -- for his 18th save.
Thomas doubled in two runs and Aaron Hill homered for the Blue Jays, who had an eight-game home winning streak stopped.
Jesse Litsch started for Toronto and yielded three runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts in five-plus innings. Scott Downs (1-2) took over in the sixth and was saddled with the loss after surrendering two runs on three hits in one inning.
Alex Rodriguez played in Toronto for the first time since May 30 when he yelled something while running toward third base on a pop up and the ball fell to the turf. The Blue Jays were clearly upset at the time and did not retaliate when they played in New York from July 16-19, but did so immediately in this game.
Litsch's first pitch in the second inning went behind Rodriguez, who remained in the batter's box while the crowd roared in approval. Rodriguez eventually drew a walk and finished 2-for-3. He also helped set up New York's big sixth inning.
The Yankees trailed 3-1 heading to the sixth, but Bobby Abreu led off with a walk and Rodriguez singled to chase Litsch in favor of Downs. Hideki Matsui greeted the lefty with a soft single into left field to score Abreu, and Cano drilled a one-out double to the gap in left-center field to chase home the tying and go-ahead runs. Cano advanced to third on a grounder by Andy Phillips and scored on a single to right by Cabrera to give New York a 5-3 edge.
Pettitte left with two on and two outs in the bottom of the sixth, and Jim Brower got Reed Johnson on a liner to third in his Yankee debut. Brower was brought up from the minors to replace veteran lefty Mike Myers, who was designated for assignment after Sunday's game.
Brower quickly exited in the seventh after yielding a leadoff single to Rios, but Luis Vizcaino struck out Wells and got a double-play grounder off the bat of Thomas.
Hill then pulled Toronto within one in the eighth with a one-out homer and the Blue Jays put two more runners aboard with two outs before Johnson tapped back to the mound for the third out.
The Yankees grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third when Cabrera led off with a triple and scored on a grounder to second by Johnny Damon, but the Blue Jays answered with two in the bottom of the inning.
Johnson drew a one-out walk and Rios singled before Wells hit a long fly ball to left field for the second out. Thomas followed with a drive to the gap in left-center field for a double over a leaping Damon, allowing both runners to score for a 2-1 edge.
Toronto tacked on a run in the fifth, but wasted a prime opportunity to blow it open after John McDonald led off with a double and Johnson drew a walk. The runners pulled off a double steal, but Pettitte struck out Rios before Wells reached on an infield single off the glove of Rodriguez at third to score a run. Pettitte then fanned Thomas and Troy Glaus to leave runners on the corners, giving the Yankees a manageable two-run deficit.
